211 Needs Your Support!

The Legislature is moving into the last couple of weeks of budget negotiations. The House Appropriations Committee has recommended $5 million over the biennium to fund 211 (a $2 million increase) and the Senate Ways and Means has proposed only $3 million (no increase). Please contact your local Senators (please see their email addresses listed below, organized by county) to ask them to support additional funding in the final operating budget under negotiation between the House and Senate right now in Olympia. “Dear Senator —

As a health and human service provider in your district, we depend on a strong and healthy 211 system to provide a centralized “No Wrong Door” access point for residents seeking assistance with essential needs. 211 maintains a database of over 17,000 services, so that when someone dials 211 or searches online at www.wa211.org they will receive referrals to the most appropriate services, which includes ours. In addition, the important new 988 crisis behavioral health line depends on 211 to serve as a wrap-around resource for support and coordination of behavioral health and other local needs for people in need.

Please support funding the Washington 211 System at the $5 million level proposed in the House Operating Budget, an enhancement to the $3 million level in the Senate’s proposal. This proposed higher level of funding will significantly stabilize the 211 system, allowing potential expanded call hours, increased staffing and training, faster call-answering times, improved responses for referrals to needed services, and better wrap-around support and coordination with 911 and the new 988 system across the state.

We urge you to see as we do, that 211 is a critical state resource that connects people in need of essential local and state supported services with live, in-person skilled assistance. Significant growth in call volume, impacted by the economic impacts of COVID-19, requires that Washington 211 increase capacity to support the current demand for help and to strengthen the partnership with 988 and 911 to provide a comprehensive state crisis response service.”
